Golden Eagles fall 5-2 in series opener at Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. --- Despite posting 10 hits on the road Thursday evening, the Tennessee Tech baseball team was unable to overcome the Jacksonville State pitching staff as the Gamecocks handed TTU a 5-2 loss.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as TTU's Tristan Archer and JSU's Aaron Elias allowed a combined four hits.

The Gamecocks finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth as Erik Underwood notched a two-run single to put JSU up 2-0.

Zephan Guyear got the offense going for Tech in the fifth as he tallied his first home run of the season to bring Tech within one at 2-1. James Abraham tripled in the sixth and eventually scored on a throwing error to bring TTU even with JSU at 2-2.

Jacksonville State responded quickly as it used a pair of doubles in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 3-2, and then added two more in the eighth to gain the 5-2 victory.

JSU used four pitchers in the series opener who gave up a combined two runs, while posting eight strikeouts.

Elias threw five innings before giving way for Travis Stout who earned the win (4-1) as he threw two innings, while giving up just one run. Todd Hornsby finished the game for the Gamecocks as he got the final five outs, en route to his seventh save of the season.

Archer (3-2) took the loss as he allowed five runs in seven innings. David Hess threw one shutout inning in relief.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
