COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- After splitting the first two games of the series against Dayton, the Tennessee Tech baseball team put together a late game rally Sunday to win the series with a 9-8 victory.
Tech scored its nine runs on 10 hits, four of which went for extra bases as Zach Stephens notched a three-run shot in the first, and a solo-shot in the fourth.
The Golden Eagles wasted no time at the plate as they jumped on Dayton starter Kyle Coenen as they rang off six runs, on four hits before chasing him after just 0.1 of an inning pitched.
Tech added two more runs in the fourth off reliever Bryce Lahrman, who threw 3.1 innings while giving up three hits and three walks.
Leading 8-7, Tech reliever Nick Price entered the game in the sixth and guided the Golden Eagles through a scoreless seventh, but in the eighth the Flyers managed to score the tying run behind two hits to even the score at eight.
In the bottom of the eighth, Tevis Sherfield coaxed a leadoff walk and was moved over to second after Austin Wulf's sacrifice bunt. Parker Schrage managed to get the second out, but Ben Burgess drove in Sherfield with an RBI-single up the middle to give Tech the 9-8 lead.
Price managed to get the first two Flyer batters in the ninth before Josh Bryant came on to get the final our for his first career save.
With the win Price improved to 1-0 on the season, as he gave up just one run on three hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Schrage took the loss as he fell to 0-4 on the season after giving up one run in 4.1 innings pitched.
Tech starter David Hess left the game after 5.1 innings, after giving up seven hits and seven runs, six of which were earned.
Austin Wulf extended his hitting streak to 12 games as he notched three hits and two RBI.
The Golden Eagles travel to Kentucky for a single game Tuesday at 3 p.m.
