Bullpen battles favors Evansville

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- Game two of Tennessee Tech's three-game series with Evansville Saturday featured a little more offense than game one as the Purple Aces took the 11-6 win.

TTU starter Matthew Shepherd and UE starter Kyle Lloyd each ran into some trouble as both starters gave up four runs each in a combined 8.1 innings of work.

Evansville struck first in the bottom of the first with an RBI-single off the bat of Jake Mahon, but Tennessee Tech would answer right back in the bottom of the third as the Golden Eagles rang off three runs, two of which were driven in by Zach Stephens.

Tech added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI-single from Michael Morris before chasing Lloyd, who had not surrendered an earned run in his first 17 innings pitched this season.

The Purple Aces put together a three-run inning of their own as they drove in three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to knot up the score at four. The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as Evan Frazier doubled to center field and was eventually driven in by Dylan Bosheers' sacrifice fly.

Tech reliever Cullen Park, who came in with one out if the fifth, managed to get six outs without giving up a hit but with one out in the top of the seventh the Purple Aces put together a six-run rally on five hits to take the lead at 10-4.

UE relievers Jake Naumman and Kyle Spencer went on to secure the win for Evansville as Naumman threw a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, while Spencer gave up one run  and two hits in the bottom of the ninth.

Andy Williams came on in relief of Park and pitched the final two innings as he gave up two hits and one unearned run.

Austin Wulf extend his hitting streak to 15 games with his leadoff single in the third inning, while Morris coaxed three walks.

Four Purple Aces tallied two RBI each including Mahon, Kyle Pollock, Chris Pearson and Kevin Kaczmarski.

Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
