Golden Eagles take on Texas Tech and Missouri at Red Raider Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas --- The Tennessee Tech baseball team took part in a pair of games Saturday, at the Red Raider Classic as it battled with Missouri State and host Texas Tech.

The Golden Eagles began the day with a back and forth affair with the Missouri State Bears that ultimately went the way of MSU 10-8.

In their previous game Friday, pitching took precedence as the Golden Eagles earned a 3-2 win, but it was the batters that stole the show Satyrday as both teams combined for 18 runs on 21 hits.

By the fourth inning, each team had tallied six runs apiece, which included a three spot for Tennessee Tech in the fourth inning. Both teams were still tied heading into the bottom of the eighth at seven, but the Bears were able to put up three runs to take a 10-7 lead. The Golden Eagles ninth-inning rally fell short as they could only muster one run as Missouri State held on for the 10-8 victory.

Junior Austin Wulf and senior Chad Hayes paced the Tennessee Tech offense as they each tallied three hits. Hayes drove in a team-leading three RBI, while Wulf scored three runs. Sophomore Zach Stephens also drove in two runs, on two hits.

For Missouri State Brent Seifert and Luke Voit each tallied a dinger, as Seifert drove in three runs, with Voit following close behind with two.

Tyler Burgess earned the win for MSU, with Grant Gordon earning the save. Garrett Baugh was saddled with the loss as he allowed four runs in four innings.

The Golden Eagles finished the day with a 9-5 loss to Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders opened the game quickly as they tallied three runs in the first behind four hits. The Golden Eagles answered back quickly in the fourth as Stephens hit a two-run shot to pull Tennessee Tech within one at 3-2.

Texas Tech answered right back in the bottom of the fourth as they notched four more runs, which included a three-run homer from Barrett Barnes, to increase its lead to 7-2.

The Golden Eagles managed to put up a three-spot in the top of the eighth but they would get no closer as Texas Tech hung on for the 9-5 win.

Shane Broyles earned the win for the Red Raiders, while Matthew Shepherd took the loss for the Golden Eagles. Josh Bryant made his Tennessee Tech debut as he threw three innings.

The Golden Eagles wrap up the Red Raider Classic Sunday as they take on Texas Tech at 10 a.m.
