In 2011 (Junior): Ben started in all 54 games
last season, serving as TTU’s primary catcher…at the
plate, he drove in 21 runs in 210 at bats for a .271 batting
average…coaxed 21 walks and scored 35 runs…tied for
the team-lead in doubles with 13…hit three home runs on the
season…had 18 multi-hit games, including three games in
which he recorded three hits…in the field he posted 297 put
outs and maintain a .988 fielding percentage…he also made
three appearances on the mound in relief, recording one win against
Lipscomb.
In 2011 (Sophomore): Burgess started 49 games of
55 for the Golden Eagles, primarily behind the plate...at the
plate, he finished with a .293 average (58-198), his highest of the
year...went 4-for-5 against SIUE and another time during the OVC
tournament against Jacksonville State...named to the OVC
all-tournament team, Burgess upped his average by 27 points, going
11-21 during the tournament with six RBI...Burgess notched 58 hits
including nine doubles and five home runs, two of which came
against Murray State to help Tech sweep the Racers and earn the
regular season no. 1 spot...defensively, Burgess led the team in
put-outs with 392 and recorded a .979 fielding percentage...batted
in a total of 58 runs and scored 39 himself, and maintained a .414
slugging percentage.
In 2009 (Freshman): Ben started 54 games for the
Golden Eagles in the outfield and behind the dish in
2009…named to the OVC all-newcomer team after batting .316
with a .414 slugging percentage…led the team in at-bats
(215) and was second in hits (68) and RBIs (45)…tied for the
team lead with 16 multi-hit games, including three four-hit games
and two three-hit games…had 12 multi-RBI games including a
career-high five RBIs against Middle Tennessee on Feb. 25 after
going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run…hit four home
runs and nine doubles on the season…had the second-longest
hit-streak of any Golden Eagle during the 2009 season with nine
consecutive games with a hit…started two games on the mound
for the Golden Eagles and pitched in eight for a total of 22.1
innings pitched…was named to the OVC all-tournament
team.
Brentwood High School: Was named team MVP, and an
all-district, all-region and all-State selection...set single
season records with 57 hits, 46 RBIs and 19 doubles his senior
season with a .479 batting average...had a .390 batting average and
37 RBIs his sophomore season…was named Rookie of the Year
after his freshman campaign…finished his career with 170
hits, 123 runs scored and 119 RBIs...also excelled in the
classroom, with a 3.8 GPA, and earned TSSAA Academic Award.
