COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Looking ahead to the conclusion of
conference season, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle baseball team
will trip to Clarksville to take on the top-seeded Governors of
Austin Peay this weekend. They'll play a twinbill on Saturday
starting at 1 p.m., capping off the series in typical fashion with
Sunday afternoon's 1 p.m. contest.
Tech, coming off of a 2-1 series win over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels next weekend, is currently resting in fourth place in OVC standings with a record of 8-6, 19-22 overall, while the Govs dominate the no. 1 spot with their own 10-4 OVC mark and 22-19 overall record.
A trio of southpaws will challenge the Golden Eagle line-up, which is currently paced by senior outfielder Casanova Donaldson. With a .341 mark in 41 games played and started, Donaldson has amassed 26 RBI off of 54 hits, including 14 for extra bases. Meanwhile, fellow senior Chad Oberacker leads the team in runs batted in with 42 on the season, hitting .304 at the plate.
Austin Peay will first look to Jeremy Dobbs to work the Golden Eagle order. Dobbs is 8-2 on the season, having made eight starts on the year and recording a 4.03 ERA, striking out a team-high 58 batters. Jack Snodgrass will throw game two for the Govs; he's logged a 4.12 ERA on the year as well as 42 Ks to go 1-5 thus far. A third lefty in Zach Toney will round out the starting pitching staff in game three. Toney currently has a 4.98 ERA with a 3-2 record in 13 appearances, having struck out 52.
Meanwhile, Tristan Archer and Matt Shepherd will take the hill on Saturday, looking to stifle the APSU lineup consisting of seven out of nine batters who are hitting over .300. Jordan Hankins leads the pack with a .353 average at the plate, ripping 47 hits in 133 at-bats and bringing in 25 runs for the Govs. Slugger John Hogan is fueling the scoring for APSU with his .313 average that's brought in 44 runs and leading the team with seven homers on the season.
Archer is set to toss game one and will be looking for his fourth win of the season to even out his current 3-4 stand. He's made 10 starts and 12 appearances, recording a 5.79 ERA and having struck out 54 batters.
Shepherd, with his 4.68 ERA, will throw game two for the Golden Eagles. He matches Archer's 3-4 record and has struck out 49 batters on the year in 59.2 innings of work. Tech's pitcher for game three has yet to be determined.
