James Gaylor lettered four times each in football and baseball, despite a four-year interruption early in the decade for military service. He was selected as captain of the football team in 1957. He was named the Most Valuable interior lineman in the league in 1956.  Gaylor’s baseball career began under Tucker with the 1951 season, then finished with three years under Quillen. He helped the team post a 20-3 record in the OVC in 1955 and 1956.
