COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Leading her team to a third place finish,
Tennessee Tech senior Stephanie Place set a course record and broke
the tape ahead of the entire 149-runner field at the Sewanee
Invitational Saturday, all helping her to earn the Ohio Valley
Conference Runner of the Week honor from the league.
A Nursing major from Bristol, Tenn., Place covered the 5K course in
course record time of 17:55.05, the fourth-best time in school
history, to open the season with a first-place finish. It was her
second consecutive individual title at the Sewanee event.
Trailing by 100 meters heading into the final mile, Place made up
ground and eventually won by 50 meters and enjoyed a 15-second
cushion over the second-place finisher.
Place and the Golden Eagle cross country teams have this weekend
off, then run at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20,
in Nashville.
