Tech volleyball falls on the road to red-hot Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. – Tennessee Tech volleyball was unable to come away with a league victory in a tough road environment on Friday night, as it fell, 3-0, at Murray State. The loss ends Tech's previous winning streak of two games and moves its record to 9-14 on the season, and 3-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Shaniece James and Erica Grant led the Golden Eagle offense with six kills each. James only committed one attack error on 15 attempts for the team's highest percentage, .333.

It was the second solid outing in a row for James, who also played a large role in Tech's 3-2 win over Eastern Illinois last Saturday with 11 kills and a .429 attack rate, along with six blocks defensively.

Grant also recorded 10 digs on the night, the second-most on the team behind Kirsten Brugere's 14.

Rachel Thomas had four kills, and led the defense at the net with five blocks.

TTU is merely the latest to run into a Murray State club (12-9, 6-3 OVC) that is absolutely rolling at the moment, as coach David Schwepker's team is the hottest in the league with six straight victories.

The Racers, who are unbeaten in four matches at home this season, were paced by the conference's elite 1-2 punch, Rachel Giustino and Dacia Brown, who rank first and second in the league, respectively, in kills per set average. Giustino is the OVC's only attacker above four kills per set for the season (4.12).

Brown had a team-high 14 kills and Giustino had 12, as the pair combined for 26 of Murray's total 44.

Tech will look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon when it squares off with another conference powerhouse, Austin Peay (19-3, 8-1 OVC), at 2 p.m. in Clarksville.
