Golden Eagles down Tennessee State for first OVC victory

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- A walk in the park it was not, but the Tennessee Tech volleyball team came through in the clutch, dropping it Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee State in five sets Friday evening, at Eblen Center.

After a competitive quartet of sets that left both teams tied at two sets each, the fans at Eblen Center were treated to a dramatic fifth set that featured five lead changes and nine instances when the score was tied.

The Tigers managed to get out in front of TTU by a pair of points in two instances at 6-4 and 7-5, but the Golden Eagles would not go quietly as they evened score in each instance as both teams found themselves tied at nine.

Both teams exchanged points as the score remained tied at 11, but three Golden Eagle blocks and a service ace proved the difference as TTU took the decisive set 15-12, for its first OVC victory of the season.

Several Golden Eagles made their presence felt all night on the court including a trio of players who tallied 12 kills each including sophomores Natalie Penrod and Elise Robertson, and freshman Ellen Conti.

Junior Madison Comperry did most of the setting up as she dished out 42 assists, while sophomore Allison May stabilized the Tech defense with 20 digs.

TSU also had a pair of players flourish on offense as Terakka Walker and Shaquita Williams each tallied 18 digs. Erika Moss registered 46 assists, while Britani Hathorn posted 20 digs.

Tech (2-13, 1-4 OVC) hosts Austin Peay Saturday, at 2 p.m.
