COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Behind senior Leah Meffert's record setting performance, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles swept the Eastern Illinois Panthers. Tech won by the scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 26-24.
"We came out with a lot of energy today," head coach John
Blair said. "The girls came in with a sense of urgency and knew
that a spot in the OVC Tournament was at stake."
The Golden Eagles opened the first set hot as they built a
17-10 lead. Tech would not look back as it took the set 25-16.
Meffert and sophomore Kelsey Gray added five
kills each.
The second set began much like the first with Tech controlling
the pace holding a 15-10 lead. The Golden Eagles outscored the
Panthers 10-8 the rest of the way to take the set 25-18.
The second set also saw Meffert become the all-time leader in
kills at Tech when she tallied her eighth kill of the match. She
currently has 1,670 career kills.
"One of my goals coming into Tech was to for me to make a name
for myself," Meffert said. "I knew coming into the match that I
would probably get the record, but I was more nervous about winning
the match so we could get into the OVC Tournament."
The third set was a back and fourth contest as both teams were
tied at 17. EIU was able to take a four-point lead at 23-19, but
the Golden Eagles answered right back with a 5-1 run to tie it at
24. A Panther attack error and a Tech ace iced the match for the
Golden Eagles.
Meffert paced the Golden Eagle offense with 15 kills, while
hitting .353. Senior Melanie Culp added 33
assists, while freshman Allison May posted 11 digs.
Tennessee Tech concludes its 2010 regular season schedule
against Southeast Missouri State Saturday, at 4:30 p.m.
