Morehead State handles TTU women, 5-2

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State jumped out to an early lead and the Tennessee Tech women’s tennis team could not come back as the Golden Eagles fell, 5-2, at the Sadler Courts on Tuesday.

Tech moved to 2-12 overall and 1-7 in the OVC, and Morehead State improved to 9-12 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

After Morehead State captured the doubles point, Tech came out with a strong performance in the singles competition. Victoria Cran and Joanna Corkern both won in straight sets to put the Golden Eagles in position for the victory, but the rally came up short.

Cran, playing at No. 3, won (6-4, 6-2) against Kayla Tuscany to improve her team-best record to 5-3 in the OVC. Cran is now 2-0 when playing in the No. 3 position.

Corkern, playing at No. 5, was victorious (6-4, 6-3) over Lauren Delaney. She evened her conference record at 2-2 this season.

Also playing for Tech were Leydi Zora (No. 1), Frederike Kahl (No. 2), Laura Porras (No. 4) and Katie Barnhill (No. 6). Zora and Porras both won the second set of their respective matches before falling in the third set.

TTU has just one conference match remaining in its 2010 schedule prior to the conference tournament. The Golden Eagles will host Tennessee State in their final home match of the season at the Tech Tennis Courts at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 9.
