Both Golden Eagle tennis teams upended by USC Upstate, 4-2

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Playing indoors for more than 12 hours Thursday, the Tennessee Tech men's and women's tennis teams each dropped a 4-2 match to USC-Upstate in non-conference action at the Cookeville Indoor Tennis Center.

In the men's match, the Golden Eagles won the points at the top and bottom of the singles ladder, but the Spartans won the four contests in between to clinch the victory. In the women's match, the contest was tied 2-2 before the visitors posted wins in the final two matches for the win.

The Golden Eagle men saw thei record level off at 3-3 while USC-Upstate improved to 6-4. The Tech women fell to 0-4 while the Spartan women left town with a 6-1 dual match record.

Sophomore Alex Chen gave Tech a 1-0 lead with a tough three-set win at No. 1 singles, downing Renzo Airaldo, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Tech's other win came from Lloyd Harris at No. 6 singles with a 9-8 (1) decision over Marco Linconir.

In between, Edgar Rodriguez, Javier Tori, Jack Roux and Ramiro Blanco claimed USC-Upstate wins at Nos. 2-5. At the No. 2 spot, Josh Girling put up a good fight in an attempt to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 match lead, claiming the first set 7-6 before losing the next two to Rodriguez.

The match swung back-and-forth in the women's contest. Francisca Valderrama gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead by outlasting Leydi Zora, 6-4, 2-6, 6-, at No. 1. Soon after, Tech's Diana Woodcock earned a three-set win at No. 2 singles to tie the match at 1-1. Woodcock won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, over Monica Pezzoti.

Upstate took a 2-1 lead as Simona Cacciuttolo edged Laura Porras in another three-set contest, winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 3.

Golden Eagle freshman Frederike Kahl kept things tight as she swept to a straight set win over Emilia Milovanovic, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot.

The No. 5 position was a cliffhanger, won in three sets by Upstate's Carolina Bello. She slipped past Victoria Cran, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to lift the Spartans ahead, 3-2. The last match on the court went to Upstate's Ana Sofia Camberos with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Katie Barnhill, to clinch the victory.

The Teh teams take a break from action for nearly two weeks. The next action for the women's team is March 18 when Tech hosts Chattanooga in a 1 p.m. contest. The Golden Eagle men and women will host Austin Peay on March 19.
