Women’s tennis downs Southeast Missouri, 5-2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Singles victories at No. 3 through No. 6 along with a sweep of the doubles competition led the Tennessee Tech women’s tennis team to a 5-2 victory against Southeast Missouri on Tuesday evening at the Redhawks Sorts Complex.

Head coach Kenny Doyle earns his first career TTU victory on the women’s side as the Golden Eagles improve to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while the Redhawks drop to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the OVC.

Three straight victories in doubles set the tone for Tuesday’s match. Victoria Cran and Frederike Kahl won at No. 1 (8-4) to improve to 6-4 this season as a team before Lorra Porras and Joanna Corkern teamed at No. 3 to win 8-5. Katie Barnhill and Leydi Zora completed the sweep at No. 2 with an 8-6 victory, giving TTU a 1-0 lead.

Cran and Corkern wasted no time giving Tech a 3-0 lead as both won handily in their singles matches. Cran, playing at No. 3 for the first time this season, upended her opponent (6-1, 6-2), while Corkern won (6-1, 6-1) to improve to 2-0 in dual meet matches this season.

Porras also followed suit by winning in straight sets at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2) to clinch the match for the Golden Eagles, and Barnhill earned a super tie-breaker victory (7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8)) as she improved her record at No. 5 to 1-1 this season.

Zora and Kahl, playing a No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, both split their first two sets before falling in their super tie-breaker third sets.

The Golden Eagles now have a four-day break before returning to action alongside the TTU men on Sunday, March 28 at Eastern Kentucky. The women’s match is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
