Austin Peay defeats Tech, 5-2, in women’s tennis

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – A win in the doubles competition was not enough to propel the Tennessee Tech women’s tennis team to a victory on Friday as the Austin Peay Lady Govs defeated the Golden Eagles, 5-2, at the Tech Tennis Courts.

TTU falls to 0-6 this season and 0-2 in the OVC, while Austin Peay improves to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, Tech came back to win at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to give the team an early lead. Laura Porras and Diana Woodcock (8-3) won at No. 3 doubles shortly following the No. 1 match finished, tying the doubles score at 1-1. Then, Katie Barnhill and Leydi Zora capped the TTU comeback with an 8-4 win to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the match.

However, Austin Peay came out strong in singles action, taking the lead early and never looking back.

Victoria Cran picked up the lone win for the Golden Eagles in singles play. Cran, playing at No. 5, won in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to even her dual-meet record at 3-3 this season.

Other Golden Eagles appearing in singles action included Zora (No. 1; 2-6, 2-6), Woodcock (No. 2; 3-6, 6-2, 1-6), Porras (No. 3; 3-6, 1-6), Frederike Kahl (No. 4; 3-6, 0-6) and Barhnill (No. 6; 1-6, 4-6).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday when they travel to Eastern Illinois for a match beginning at 1 p.m.
