Golden Eagle women’s tennis victorious in final match

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – One day after the announcement that the women’s tennis program at Tennessee Tech University would be suspended following this season, the Golden Eagles performed nearly flawlessly in a 7-0 sweep over Tennessee State at the Tech Tennis Courts.

In the doubles competition, Tech made quick work of TSU, losing just two games in the three matches combined.

Frederike Kahl and Victoria Cran paired at No. 1 to take an 8-1 victory and finish their 2009-10 season with a team-best 8-8 record as a tandem.

At No. 2 doubles, Laura Porras and Diana Woodcock handled Lia Stewart and Kryston Mason of TSU, 8-0. The duo finished 2-0 at the No. 2 position this season for TTU.

Katie Barnhill and Joanna Corkern teamed up for just the third time this season and picked up their first victory together as they defeated Lezlie Knight and Kwatema Mensah, 8-1.

The Golden Eagles continued to roll in singles play, led by the top of the lineup. Leydi Zora won (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1, while Woodcock also took all 12 games (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2.

Porras defeated Penelope Johnson at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), while Cran won (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4.

Both Kahl and Corkern finished the season with victories as well. Kahl won (6-1, 6-1) to even her record at 1-1 at the No. 5 position, while Corkern improved to 3-2 at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Cran closed out the campaign with the best record in the team, finishing 14-7 overall in her first season as a Golden Eagle.

Tech sent the Lady Tigers to a 0-10 overall record and 0-9 mark in the OVC. The Golden Eagles finish their 2009-10 season with a 3-12 record overall and 2-7 record in conference play.
