2008-2009: Laura Porras made an impact on the Tech women's tennis team her freshman year. Porras' true talents came out when the weather enabled the Golden Eagles to start playing outside. She went on a 4 game winning steak against players from Chatanooga, Morehead State, UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. She continued to shine after that, winning 4 of her next 8 matches. Her consistent style and fight to win every match gives Laura a competitive edge over other players. She was a huge contributor to the team in the conference tournament, winning 6 out of 9 OVC matches. Laura also showed a lot of promise in her doubles abilities as well. With different partners throughout the year, Porras helped her team earn doubles points to take them to the conference tournament. She won 3 out of 6 in conferences matches with partners Joanna Corkern and Diana Woodcock. Porras and Woodcock also earned the first match for the Golden Eagles for the first round of the OVC conference tournament in 2009. Laura's outstanding achievements were recognized and awarded at the 2008-09 Tennis Banquet, where Coach, Dan Silverstein gave her The Impact Player Award, meant for the first-year player who made the biggest impact.  Laura went 8-8 in singles in 2008-09, and had a record of 4-6 in doubles.

Fall 2009: Porras competed in two tournaments in the fall, giving her a 2-3 record in singles and 1-3 record for doubles with partner Diana Woodcock.
