Tech soccer team heads toward 2013 spring schedule

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the weather slowly turns warmer and calmer, the Tennessee Tech soccer team continues its push toward the 2013 season, announcing its spring schedule. Five games make up the list, including the team's alumni game.

The Golden Eagles will kick off their spring season with a trip to Western Kentucky on Saturday, March 23. The two squads will face off in a 7-on-7 contest, playing on a smaller field and with less players to provide extra playing time at other positions for the players.

Tech will then host three straight opponents before wrapping up the schedule with its annual alumni game. The team will welcome Cumberland University on Saturday, April 6 for a 1 p.m. CDT bout. The following Saturday, local in-state rival Lipscomb will make the trip to Cookeville, also for a 1 p.m. match. On Saturday, April 20, another 1 p.m. contest has been set with Trevecca Nazarene.

"Hopefully we can get our girls some valuable experience with these game," said head coach Daniel Brizard. "We want to get them on the field and playing. The hardest part about spring is that it doesn't really mean anything in the sense of we're not competing for a title or a trophy. It does mean a lot in terms of gaining experience and getting some ball touches in game situations. You really want to be successful because building some momentum out of the spring heading to summer training is always nice."

The final game of the spring will be the team's annual alumni game, a contest that welcomes any and all alumni of the Tech women's soccer program to come out and participate. The match will begin at 11 a.m. with a gathering and cookout to follow shortly after.
