Golden Eagles drop the first of this weekend’s pair of conference match-ups against Murray

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- A jump out of the gate for the Racers catches the Golden Eagles off guard as Sophie Hargreaves' hat trick fuels Murray to a three-nil win over Tech in Friday's physical match-up.

Tennessee Tech and Murray State nearly went shot-for-shot in the first period, but it was Hargreaves who netted two goals on sophomore Megan Polk, one in the 11th minute and one at the 13 minute mark  to give the Racers an early 2-0 lead.

Sarah Gawthrop lead the way for the Golden Eagles, taking four of Tech's 10 total shots, while Jen Hoffman contributed two.

Polk notched two saves in the first half after facing seven shots before being relieved by freshman Becca Toler in the second half. Toler faced nine shots by Murray, saving seven. Hargreaves logged her third goal in the 70th minute of the contest.

"We've had trouble all season controlling the pace of the game from the start," said first-year coach Daniel Brizard. "The team can't win games without learning to lock into their positions for a full 90 minutes."

The Golden Eagles will head to Martin on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match-up against the Skyhawks with a 2-10 record, 0-3 in the OVC.
