LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team became the first
team to score a goal against undefeated Marshall in 2009, as junior
Jen Hoffman put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 in the first half
against the Thundering Herd. But Marshall would respond with 3
unanswered goals in the first half en route to a 3-2 win over the
Golden Eagles at the University of Kentucky Tournament on
Friday.
Hoffman's goal came in the 13th minute of the contest after
freshman Kerri Reid set her up with a crossing pass. The goal
was Hoffman's first of the season, as Reid racked up her
team-leading second assist of the year.
The Thundering Herd answered in a big way, scoring three goals in
the final 20 minutes of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the
break. First it was Kristen Berquist putting Marshall on the board
in the 26th minute to tie the game at one. Then Erika Duncan gave
Marshall a 2-1 in the 30th minute. Finally, Megan Tabler put
Marshall up 3-1 in the 39th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker had three saves in the first
half for the Golden Eagles and finished the contest with seven
saves.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the second half, closing the gap
on a goal from Cambron in the 62nd minute to pull Tech within 3-2.
The goal was Cambron's second of the season, and she is second on
the team in points with five. Cambron's goal was assisted by junior
Brooke Mayo.
The Golden Eagles finished the game with three shots, all on goal.
Hoffman had the only shot that didn't reach the back of the net for
Tech.
Reid, Taren Brown, Leigh Heffner and Sarah Gawthrop played all 90
minutes for Tech, while Julie Thompson played 89.
Tech falls to 1-6-1 on the season, as Marshall improves to a
perfect 7-0. The meeting was the first all-time between the two
programs.
The Golden Eagles will play the second of their two matches at the
UK Tournament on Sunday against host Kentucky.
Tech will return to Cookeville next weekend to open Ohio Valley
Conference play against UT Martin on Sept. 25. Tech will then host
OVC foe Murray State on Sept. 27. Admission to Tech home soccer
matches is free.
