Golden Eagles ranked sixth after first day of OVC Championships

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech women's golf team completed the first round of action at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Monday afternoon, ranking sixth among the nine league teams in competition at the Schoolmaster Course at the Shoals.

The Golden Eagles turned in a collective 309 on the first day of the league's annual, postseason event, sitting just three shots back of fifth-place Austin Peay.

Pacing the way for the purple and gold were a pair of veterans, Shelby Johnson and Arianna Clemmer. A local Sparta native, Johnson carded a 4-over 76, featuring two birdies and 11 pars. Clemmer fired off 13 pars with a birdie for her own 76, as the two juniors ranked tied for 15th among the 45 golfers participating.

Next among the Tech lineup was freshman Heidi Lawson, who tied for 24th after finishing her first career round in OVC play with a pair of birdies. She shot a 78 on the day, including a solid 1-over on the back nine.

Tying for 26th was senior Lindsay Miller. She posted a 79 with a birdie and 10 pars while finishing the front nine at 2-over. Rounding out the Tech lineup was sophomore Kate Mashburn, who tied for 37th after completing play with an 87.

The Golden Eagles will tee off in round two of action on Tuesday, with the first Tech golfer heading out at 8:50 a.m. CT.
