NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Halfway through its final event of the 2018-19 fall season, the Tennessee Tech women's golf team found itself in perfect position on the leaderboard Monday, ranking second at the Town and Country Invitational hosted by Tennessee State.
Competing at McCabe Golf Course in Nashville, the Golden Eagles posted their lowest round of the year to rank in second among the field of seven. Tech turned in a 292, sitting just four shots behind Ohio Valley Conference and in-state rival Austin Peay with just 18 holes to play on Tuesday.
It was a concerted effort across the board that led to the impressive day by the purple and gold, as all five members of Tech's starting lineup fired scores of 75 or better on the par-70 course, the first time the team accomplished the feat this season.
Guiding the Golden Eagles on day one of play was junior Shelby Johnson. The Tech veteran finished the day in a tie for third among the 48 participants, firing an even-par 70 to sit just two strokes back of the event leader.
The next three members of the Tech squad on the leaderboard all carded the same score on the day, a 4-over 74. Included in that group, which ranked in a tie for 11th, were senior Lindsay Miller, sophomore Kate Mashburn and junior Arianna Clemmer.
Just one stroke behind her teammates was sophomore Hannah Bratton. The youngster tallied a 5-over 75 to rank in a tie for 20th overall.
Competing as an individual, Isabel York also finished the day as a member of the 74 club, shattering her previous career-best round of 79 by five strokes. Rounding out the Golden Eagles in competition was freshman Heidi Lawson, who finished with an 80.
Round two is set to begin with tee times at 9:30 a.m. CT.
