KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Tennessee Tech women's golf team concluded its first round of spring action Sunday afternoon, finishing round one of the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic ranked 33rd among 43 teams.
Participating on the 5,941-yard Oak Point Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Golden Eagles posted a first-round total of 312, sitting just nine strokes back out of the top 22 and berth into the championship round at Osprey Point on Tuesday.
Sophomore Shelby Johnson led the Golden Eagles through the first 18 holes, carding a 2-over 74 thanks to a 2-under performance on the par-5 holes. She ranked in a tie for 41st among the 218 participants.
Not far behind, senior Allyson Dunn posted a 5-over 77 to finish the first day second among the Golden Eagles. She tied for 104th while racking up four birdies on the day.
Junior Lindsay Miller was next among Tech's finishers through round one, tying for 151st overall. Miller turned in an 8-over 80 to contribute to the team's score. Fellow junior Hollee Sadler followed right behind with a 9-over 81, tying for 161st.
Rounding out the Tech lineup was sophomore Arianna Clemmer, who posted an 84 to rank in a tie for 191st.
Host College of Charleston held the early tournament lead, boasting a one-stroke lead over William & Mary with an even-par 288. Four players tied for the lead individually with a 3-under 69, including Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo, North Florida's Teresa Conroy, William & Mary's Allison Olberding, and Stephen F. Austin's Alexandra Batista.
The Golden Eagles will participate on the Osprey Point court at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in round two, which will commence with a 7:45 a.m. CT shotgun start.
