SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite battling Mother Nature all day, the Tennessee Tech women's golf team completed the first round of action at the Terrier Intercollegiate Monday afternoon, rounding out the first 18 holes in sixth place among 11 teams.
With the weather taking a turn for the worse just after the first round concluded – tornado warnings surfaced not long after the conclusion of the round – the Golden Eagles fought their way to a 314.
High Point led the way through day one, firing a 292 to lead by 11 strokes. The Panthers' Cayla Smith posted a 3-under 69 to rank first individually.
Tech's leader in the clubhouse after Monday's opening round was sophomore Shelby Johnson, whose 1-over 73 was good enough to rank her in a tie for sixth among the 60 participants.
True freshman Kate Mashburn carded a first-round 79, tying for 24th overall, while senior Allyson Dunn tied for 26th after an 80. Junior Hollee Sadler followed in the ranks, tying for 34th with a score of 82.
Rounding out the Golden Eagle lineup was sophomore Arianna Clemmer, who carded an 86.
The second and final round of play at the Country Club of Spartanburg is set to begin with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start Tuesday morning.
