SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women's golf team set itself up for a big third round at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate Monday afternoon, shaving nine strokes off of its first-round 309 to rank second in the seven-team field.
Scoring a 300 on the Highlands Course of Sevier Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn., the Golden Eagles moved its total to 609, sitting just eight strokes back of tournament leader Lee University. Tech also held a four-stroke advantage over Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont.
Leading the surge for the Tech squad were junior Allyson Dunn and senior Whitney Robertson, who carded 2-over 73s to both move into the top-10 of field of 44. Dunn finished the day tied for fifth place with an overall total of 152, moving into the tournament lead for birdies with seven. She also ranked third in par-five scoring with a mark of 1-under.
Robertson, who ranked third in the field with a 1-over total on par-three holes, moved into a tie for ninth place with a total of 153. Redshirt freshman Arianna Clemmer wrapped up play on Monday tied with Dunn for fifth place, carding an 80 after a first-round 72 for a total of 152. Her 24 holes of even par through 36 holes in the event ranked third overall.
Senior Lydia Triplett matched her output from round one action, scoring a 78 for a total of 156. She tied with teammate Hollee Sadler for 13th overall. A sophomore, Sadler shaved four strokes off her first-round 80 for a 76 and grand total of 156.
Three Golden Eagles competed as individuals, with redshirt freshman Shelby Johnson leading the way by tying for 18th place. She finished with a second-round 79 after an 80 on Monday, posting a total of 159. Next among the Tech players was sophomore Lindsay Miller, who carded 78-83=161 to rank 21st. Haley Davidson improved a shot in the second round, posting an 85 for a total of 171.
Carson-Newman's Elizabeth England took sole possession of the individual lead on Monday, firing her second straight 72 for a 144 overall and two-stroke lead over Evansville's Kayla Katterhenry.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up play at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon, with play kicking off at 8:00 a.m. CT in a shotgun start.
