Everts places third, leads Tech to fourth-place finish at Wendy's Invitational

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – An impressive veteran performance was just what the doctor ordered for the Tennessee Tech women's golf team as junior Maddi Everts closed out an impressive 54-hole event to lead the Golden Eagles to a fourth place finish at the CSU Wendy's Invitational Tuesday afternoon.

Now in her fourth year as a member of the Tech squad (after redshirting a year due to injury), Everts showed off both her talent and experience on her way to All-Tournament honors and a third-place finish. She wrapped up play with a 75-71-73=219 to lead Tech to a steady improvement each day and a final score of 308-303-302=913. The team total set a new standard for 54-hole play for the Tech program, breaking the previous record by four strokes.

The All-Tournament nod was the fourth of her career and the first for a Golden Eagle this season. It also marked the first All-Tournament honor for Everts since the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Championships, after dealing with injury for much of the 2013-14 campaign. The league's leader in scoring average (75.0) through nine rounds this year, Everts also broke current teammate Whitney Robertson's 54-hole program mark by three strokes. Robertson carded a then-record 222 in the first tournament of the year, the Jan Weaver-Murray State Invitational.

Sophomore Whitney Robertson fired an impressive third-round 72, rallying after scores of 76 and 77 on the first day to collect a finish in a tie for 13th overall. She tallied a three-round card of 225 for her second-lowest score of the year.

Finishing 19th was junior Megan Williamson, who totaled 228 in over 54 holes. She nabbed rounds of 75, 74, and 79 to help Tech bounce back to a top-five finish.

Cookeville native Anna Cunningham rounded out the scorers for the Tech squad, wrapping up her third collegiate round with an 82-81-78=241.

"That's the kind of performance we expect out of Maddi and know she is capable of every time she picks up the club," head coach Polk Brown said. "She has dealt with some nagging injuries over the past year, so it was great to see her turn in that kind of performance. Our whole team played well and I was happy to see that we consistently found ways to reduce our scores throughout the event. I think we took a step forward today and I can't wait to see how we carry that into next week's event at Austin Peay."

Tech will take part in its fourth event of the season as the team heads to Austin Peay's F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate Monday, Oct. 13. Play in the event will conclude on Tuesday.
