MONROE, La. – The Tennessee Tech women started off the Louisiana road trip in style, opening up the three-game swing with a big victory over ULM, topping the Warhawks 83-59 on Saturday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The win gives Tech its 999th program victory and gives head coach Kim Rosamond her 98th career victory. Only 20 Division I women's basketball teams have won 1,000 games.
The Golden Eagles earn their first road win of the season and improve to 6-3 on the season.
Tech left no doubt in the contest, never trailing in the game. With barely four minutes ticked off in the game, the Golden Eagles were up by seven, then eight before the quarter concluded. Tech started off hot, shooting nearly 80 percent at the first media timeout, but cooled down to 44.4 percent at the end of the first quarter.
Leading 20-15 at the end of the quarter, Tech used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 46-30 at the intermission.
Maaliya Owens scored 11 of her 18 points in the first half to lead all scorers into the locker room.
Tech, at the half, was averaging 2.1 points per turnover, converting eight first-half Warhawk miscues into 17 points. The average dropped just slightly as ULM turned the ball over just twice more as the Golden Eagles collected 19 points off nine turnovers for the game.
The Golden Eagles also dominated on the glass, winning the rebound battle 46-35. Tech had 17 offensive caroms – five more than ULM – and converted into 17 second-chance points.
With the size and aggressive style the Warhawks employed, Tech was able to overcome those and collect 52 points in the paint to ULM's 32, while also stealing the ball eight time to none for the Warhawks.
There were only two statistics the Warhawks won the day – blocks (6-1) and free-throws (21-for-34 to Tech's 4-for-6).
Owens ended the game leading all scorers with 18 points, finishing 7-for-17 from the field and 4-for-11 from 3-point range, while also finishing the day with seven rebounds and five assists. Jada Guinn had 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists as Guinn was 7-for-9 from the floor.
Redshirt freshman Reagan Hurst had 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting and 2-for-2 at the line, while Anna Walker had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists and Jordan Brock had 10 points and three rebounds.
Tech finished the night shooting 49 percent – 36-for-24 – from the floor, including 7-for-24 from 3-point range. ULM was 19-for-53 from the field (36 percent), going 0-for-11 from 3-point range.
Bre Sutton led the Warhawks (3-7) with 14 points and Emma Meriweather had 10. Both players led ULM with seven rebounds.
