NASHVILLE – In a game of wills and woes, the Tennessee Tech
women's basketball team was unable to find a way to counter their
turnovers, and despite junior guard Diamond
Henderson willing a game-high 29 points, Tech dropped the road
contest, 62-53, to the Belmont Bruins Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (4-11, 1-1) shot an impressive 57.9% from the field in the first half, including a perfect 4-for-4 for Henderson. But a count of 17 turnovers weighed down the Golden Eagles as the Bruins were able to bank 16 points off those giveaways.
The Bruins (5-11, 2-1) had afflictions of their own in the opening half as they went just one-for-seven from the free throw stripe, and committed nine turnovers, but went into the break with the 35-29 advantage.
Belmont extended its advantage to 14, opening the second half on a 13-6 run, taking a 49-35 lead. The Golden Eagles were able to claw back to just a six-point gap on three different occasions but were never able to gain the upper hand.
Henderson added three rebounds and two assists to her 29 points, while freshman Shunice Herron added a career-high eight points on perfect shooting from the field and the charity stripe. Junior T'Keyah Williams led the Golden Eagles with seven rebounds as Tech outrebounded the Bruins, 39-32.
However, TTU finished with 25 turnovers and just three assists, while Belmont finished with 14 assists and just 12 turnovers.
Belmont saw four different players finish in double-figures, led by Jordyn Luffman with 12. Taylor Mills and Katie Carroll both finished with 11, and Adrienne Tarrence finished with 10 and six assists.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Monday as they travel back to Nashville to take on Tennessee State for a 6 p.m. CT affair.
