Golden Eagles split doubleheader with Morehead State

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With postseason repercussions on the line, the Tennessee Tech softball team split Friday's doubleheader with Morehead State as it took the first game 7-2, but fell in the nightcap 5-3.

Morehead State may have tallied the first two runs of game one, but the Golden Eagles would feast off the MSU pitching in the middle innings as they scored seven unanswered runs to secure a 7-2 victory.

Chanelle Spalding got the bats going in the bottom of the third as she hit a two-run single to left field to knot up the score at two.

Tech kept its momentum going into the fourth as Whitney Cummings hit her fourth home run of the season the give Tech its first lead of the game at 3-2. Brooke Basten and Melody Christian added RBI singles to increase the Golden Eagle lead to 5-2.

 The TTU scoring continued into the top of the fifth as Brittney Spalding opened the inning with a single, setting the stage for Callie Schmidt, who belted her sixth home run of the season to put Tech up 7-2.

A solid performance from Holly Thomas in circle secured the win for Tech, as Thomas went the distance, striking out five, for her 12th win of the season. Morehead State's Kelcey McMurray took the loss as she gave up three runs in three innings.

TTU's momentum carried over into the second game as it tagged MSU starter Ashley Imperial for three runs in the bottom of the third, two of which came off an RBI double from Schmidt.

Morehead State would not go quietly as it mounted its own rally with one run in the top of the fourth and a four-run fifth inning off Tech started Claudia Harke, to take the lead at 5-3.

MSU relief pitcher McMuuray shut the Tech offense down through the final four innings as she gave up just two hits and two walks, to secure her 10th victory of the season. Harke shouldered the loss as she struck out a pair.

Tech and Morehead State wrap up their three-game series Saturday. The opening pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
