COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Golden Eagle softball team put on a hitting clinic in its non-conference doubleheader against Tennessee Wesleyan, as it earned a pair of five-inning decisions by the scores of 8-0 and 9-1.
Game one of the doubleheader started with both pitchers
keeping out of trouble in the first two innings, but in the bottom
of the third Tech put together four runs, using four hits and two
Bulldog errors to take a 4-0 lead.
Tech followed with another four-run inning in the fourth that
was capped off by a two-run home run from sophomore Brittney
Spalding to put the Golden Eagles up 8-0. TTU would go on to
take the 8-0 victory as Tennessee Wesleyan went down 1-2-3 in the
top of the fifth.
Junior Whitney
Cummings earned her fourth win of the season as she threw four
shutout innings, while striking out five.
Brittney Spalding paced the Golden Eagle offense with three
RBI, while her sister Chanelle
Spalding drove in two runs and scored two runs.
Tech picked up right where it left off in the bottom of the
first in game two as it put up seven runs on four hits and five
walks to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs managed to get one run on the board in the top of
the third, but in the bottom of the third Tech responded quickly as
freshman Megan
Pearson hit her first career, two-run home run to left field to
put Tech up 9-1.
Tech allowed just one Tennessee Wesleyan base runner in the
final two innings as it completed its second five-inning victory of
the day.
Junior Holly Thomas earned
her seventh win of the season as she struck out seven batters in
three innings, while giving up just one unearned run.
Pearson led the Golden Eagle offense with four RBI, while
scoring two runs.
Tech resumes OVC play this weekend on the road in a three-game
series with Southeast Missouri, beginning with a doubleheader
Saturday. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
