Schmidt earns first career OVC Player of the Week nod

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Callie Schmidt hit everything in sight this past weekend as the Tennessee Tech softball team finished 3-2 at the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial. For her performance, Schmidt was selected the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week in a vote by OVC sports information directors.

Schmidt finished the three-day tournament 8-for-16 at the plate for a .500 batting average while amassing a slugging percentage of 1.125. A catcher in her second season with the Golden Eagles, Schmidt hit three homers, drove in six RBIs and scored five runs over the weekend. She was also solid behind the plate, compiling a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

To begin the tournament, Schmidt had a career game against Miami (Ohio) as she finished 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Her four hits were a new career high as she helped Tech to a 5-4 victory.

Later in the day, Schmidt hit another long ball against Oakland to make it two home runs in as many games.

Schmidt was the lone offensive bright spot for the Golden Eagles against Wright State as she roped an RBI double in the first inning to account for the only TTU run of the game. She followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance against East Tennessee State in the tournament's final game as she hit her third homer in three days and also had three RBIs and two runs scored.

This is Schmidt's first Player of the Week honor of her career, and she is the first Golden Eagle to earn the distinction since Stephanie Fischer was selected in the 2008 season.

For the season, Schmidt ranks first in the team in batting average (.448), slugging percentage (.793), hits (13), RBIs (10) and home runs (3).

Schmidt and the Golden Eagles return to action this weekend at the Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Ga. Tech begins the three-day tournament on Friday against Western Carolina.
