Tech women finish second, men third at TTU Invitational

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech women's cross country team placed second, paced by Beth Miller, and the Golden Eagle men were third as Mike Mahan led the squad at the annual TTU Cross Country Invitational Friday afternoon at Southern Hills Golf Course.

Evansville posted a perfect score of 15 to take first place in the women's race, led by race winner Kelby Jenkins in the time of 18:45.94 over the hilly, 5K course. Tech placed second with 63 points, followed by North Alabama (74), Carson Newman (105) and Tennessee State (133).

In the men's 8K event, Evansville scored 28 points and made it a sweep of the afternoon by edging Lipscomb (34) for first place in the team standings. Tech (68) was third, followed by North Alabama (117), Carson Newman (143) and Tennessee State (162). Evansville's Cody Stein crossed the line first with a time of 26:25.56.

Miller (photo above right), a senior from Watertown, Wis., posted her best time in three runnings at the TTU Invitational, placing eighth in 20:30.64. Rebecca Cline was next for Tech, finishing 11th in the time of 21:08.82, while Meghan O'Donoghue was the third Tech runner across the line in the time of 21:19.58 to place 12th. Placing fourth on the squad and 14th in the race was Peri Winborne, covering the distance in 21:25.84.

Kathryn Forbes filled Tech's fifth spot, placing 19th in 21:43.90. The balance of Tech's lineup included Kara Webb (23rd/22:04.48), Elizabeth Mitchell (28th/22:46.05), Amelia McCoy (30th/23:08.26), Dalis Connell (44th/25:00.33), and Kendale Caldwell (45th/25:01.51).

Mahan (photo at left), a junior from Tullahoma, Tenn., wasn't too far off his career-best pace in leading the Tech men with his eighth place finish of 27:40.42. Matthew Bishop was next for coach Tony Cox's team, placing 12th with a 28:10.82 showing. The third Tech runner was Sterling Smith, finishing 17th in 28:30.17, followed by Adam McLeod at 28:51.66 to place 20th, and Daniel Francis in 29:06.19 for a 22nd place effort.

Also in the meet for Tech were Kolbe Andrzejewski (35th/30:28.81), Charlie Jordan (48th/32:48.10), Matt Pennycuff (50th/33:01.30), Nathan Snow (57th/34:04.24) and Nathan Livesay (59th/35:09.88).

The next meet for Tech's cross country teams is next Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Berry College Invitational.
