COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Sam Taylor earned sixth place
individually and four more Golden Eagles raced across the finish
line in the Top 15 as the Tennessee Tech men’s cross country
team claimed second place Friday afternoon in the TTU Invitational,
held at Southern Hills Golf Course.
Chattanooga pushed five runners around the 8K course in the Top 10
to capture the team title with 26 points, while Tech was second
with 53 points.
Jacksonville State, led by individual winner David Nilsson,
finished third with 60 points. North Alabama (98), Murray State
(117) and Tennessee State (162) rounded out the field of six
teams.
Nilsson cruised to the win in 25:32.47, posting a 12-second margin
over Chattanooga’s Emmanuel Kirwa n 25:44.54.
Taylor, who also led the Golden Eagles with a sixth place finish
last year, toured the course in 26:49.94.
Senior Peter Woerner was the second Golden Eagle to finish,
placing 11th in 27:23.34, followed closely by freshman Chris Bishop
in 12th place at 27;51.43. Just one spot back was junior Ben
Shassere in 28:09.34.
Tech’s fifth counter was Jarrad Read, finishing 15th in
28:15.48.
Seven more runners competed for the Golden Eagles, with seniors
Joseph DeLorenzo and Ben Thompson next to finish. DeLorenzo was
17th in 28:24.30, while Thompson was seconds behind in 18th place
at 28:27.22.
Also in the race were freshman John Greene, sophomore Daniel
Francis, freshman Nathan Livesey, senior Will Enicks, and freshman
Steven Bretz.
The Golden Eagles will run in the Furman Invitation next Saturday
(Oct. 10).
