WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team concluded its busy stretch of three matches in three days with a 7-0 loss at No. 14 Wake Forest Monday afternoon.
Playing against their third consecutive nationally ranked foe to begin the spring, the Golden Eagles (0-3) were upended in all four completed singles bouts. Mika Berghaus went toe to toe with Deacs' top competitor, but ultimately fell in three sets with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Filippo Moroni.
The other three solo showdowns wrapped up in straight sets, with Luciano Tacchi collecting a 6-0, 6-1 nod over Elias Grubert in the No. 2 spot, Jurabek Karimov picking up a 6-2, 7-5 triumph against Evzen Holis in the No. 3 position and Bozo Barun securing a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jaime Paquet in the No. 4 affair.
Pol Masafret retired in the No. 5 clash after falling 6-1 in the first set to Matthew Thompson, while Saud Alhogbani won via forfeit in the No. 6 slot.
With five available Golden Eagles in the mix, Tech was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles matchup, which helped lead to Wake Forest (1-0) clinching the tandem point after the nationally ranked duo of No. 30 Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez Azcona knocked off Mika Berghaus and Elias Grubert 6-3 in the top tilt. Jaime Paquet and Evzen Holis managed to take a 5-2 lead against Bozo Barun and Matthew Thompson in the No. 2 position at the time the tangle was called.
Tech will stay on the road for its fourth match of the spring, as the Golden Eagles will travel to Liberty for a Saturday contest with the Flames. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
