COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – A stellar singles showing sent the Tennessee Tech tennis team into the win column, as the Golden Eagles captured all six solo showdowns on the way to a 6-1 victory over Austin Peay in the club's home finale.
Tech's 2022 Cookeville swan song continued a recent surge that has now featured a 5-2 mark over TTU's last seven contests. With the win, the Golden Eagles (6-11, 3-0 OVC) will now play for all regular-season marbles Saturday afternoon in Nashville, as Tech will face off with Belmont in a winner-take-all tangle for the conference's regular-season crown.
After dropping the doubles point with a pair of defeats to the Governors (5-8, 1-2), TTU turned it on during singles play to the tune of a perfect six-for-six of showing. In fact, all six meetings were decided in straight-sets and three different Golden Eagles picked up a 6-0 set victory during the dominating performance.
Carlos Vicente secured a 6-0, 6-4 win over Anton Damberg in the No. 3 position, while Rafael Tosetto notched a 6-0, 6-3 nod against Giovanni Becchis in the No. 5 battle and Andre Rodeia collected a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Hogan Stoker in the No. 6 get-together. Mika Berghaus and Evzen Holis were equally impressive in their respected affairs, with Berghaus overpowering Oliver Andersson 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 tilt and Holis seizing a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Tom Bolton in the No. 4 slot.
Elias Grubert's top-spot matchup required some drama, but when the dust finally settled, the Parana, Argentina product picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win against Frederic Schlossmann in the final solo clash that concluded.
Austin Peay took home victories in each of the top-two tandem tilts to take the doubles point and the early edge. Anton Damberg and Frederic Schlossmann secured a 6-3 decision over Elias Grubert and Mika Berghaus in the top slot and Tom Bolton and Giovanni Becchis rolled off a 6-2 win against Evzen Holis and Andre Rodeia in the No. 2 position.
The Golden Eagles managed a 6-0 victory out of Carlos Vicente and Rafael Tosetto in the No. 3 meeting against Oliver Andersson and Hogan Stoker.
With one match remaining in the regular season, Tech will square off with Belmont in a match that will decide the OVC regular-season champion on Saturday. First serve from the Belmont Tennis Complex in Nashville is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
