LAFAYETTE, La. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team wrapped up its stay in Louisiana with a pair of losses, as the Golden Eagles were upended in both matches of a doubleheader against East Carolina and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tech (2-9) dropped the opener 4-0 to ECU, before falling 4-2 in the nightcap to the Islanders in a twin bill that featured only singles action.
The front of Tech's lineup flourished in the double dip, with the top two spots of No. 51 Eduardo Mena in the No. 1 position and Wenceslao Albin in the No. 2 spot combining for an unblemished day. After their morning matchups with the Pirates (9-3) did not finish, Mena and Albin each checked the win column in the second affair with the Islanders (11-1).
Mena defeated Corpus Christi's Francois Kellerman, 7-5, 6-1, while Albin also won in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over William Mottet No. 2 slot. Mena's opening battle with ECU's Freddie McGeehan did not conclude with Mena leading 6-5 in the second set after falling 6-3 in the opener. Albin dropped his initial set with Vlad Anghel, but captured the second set, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles dropped the final four matchups with the Pirates, as Ronny Georgi defeated Marc Mila, 6-1, 7-6, in the No. 3 affair, Kasey Countee topped Gonzalo Garcia, 7-6, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot, Wisse Jonker edged Riku Kubota, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 5 spot and Javier Renones knocked off Arthur Justo, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.
A similar fate struck Tech against the Islanders, with the Golden Eagles unable to secure a victory outside of the top two spots. Carlos Pedrosa bested Marc Mila, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 3 matchup, while Thomas Rodrigues took down Gonzalo Garica, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 affair, Okkie Kellerman captured a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Riku Kubota in the No. 5 tilt and Biyik Akinshemoyin slipped past Arthur Justo, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 6 slot.
TTU will have a lengthy layoff, before traveling to Winthrop for the squad's next match on Mar. 9.
