Golden Eagles close out non-conference slate with meeting at Louisville

By Dylan Vazzano, TTU Sports Information Coordinator

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – For the final time this season, the Tennessee Tech tennis team will square off with a non-conference opponent as the Golden Eagles trek to Louisville to tangle with the Cardinals Thursday evening. The match from Bass-Rudd Tennis Center is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.

Tech (6-5) enters the non-conference finale red hot having captured 6-1 wins in three of its last four matches, highlighted by a pair of weekend nods over Tennessee State and Belmont to open OVC action.

Sophomore Eduardo Mena proved to be perfect in the two tilts in Nashville, rolling off a combined 4-0 record in doubles and singles play out of the No. 1 spot in the order. With the pair of singles victories, the OVC's preseason top ranked player moved to 10-1 this spring.

Mena wasn't the only Golden Eagle that soared to the tune of an undefeated singles mark over the weekend as freshman Guillermo Nicolas, and sophomores Jorge Alfonzo and Carlos Tajes went unblemished as well. Alfonzo and Tajes gave TTU punch at the bottom of the order, combining to go 4-0 out of the No. 5 and No. 6 slots in Kenny Doyle's lineup.

As far as the Cardinals (9-11) are concerned, Louisville has dropped four of the last five matches with all four losses coming in ACC play. A predominately youthful squad, eight of the 11 on the roaster are either freshman or sophomores, with freshman George Hedley paving the way with a team-high seven wins during the spring.

Louisville has controlled the all-time series with Tech, seizing 10 of the 12 matchups between the two schools.

Before the Cardinals hook up with TTU, Louisville will host Illinois State at 11 a.m.
