Golden Eagle tennis opens season with narrow, 4-3 victory over Lipscomb


NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech tennis team used the crucial point it earned in doubles play to pull off a 4-3 victory over Lipscomb Saturday night in the Golden Eagles season opening match played at the Richland Country Club indoor courts. The teams split the six singles points.

Tech won the doubles point by claiming 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, allowing the No. 3 match to go unfinished. Alex Arovin and Alberto Esteban downed Alejandro Manzanares and Philippe Courteau at No. 1, while the No. 2 duo of Nicolas Guillermo and Eduardo Mena topped Rob Mitchell and Daniel Cardenas.

Leading 1-0 in the match, Tech put up points at No. 1 by Mena and No. 2 singles by Arovin, along with the No. 4 spot by Guillermo.

Mena beat Mitchell, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the headline match of the night, while Arovin also went three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, to beat Manzanares.

Guillermo posted a straight set win over Cardenas, 6-4, 6-3.

Tech will now set its sights on a matchup with UNC Asheville on Sunday, Feb. 7. The match is slated to get underway at 2 p.m. CT.
