RALEIGH, N.C. – Tennessee Tech players posted six wins over the weekend in the North Carolina State Wolfpack Invitational tennis tournament.
Sophomore Carlos Tajes was the Tech leader, going 2-1 in the "Grey" singles draw with victories over opponents from East Carolina and North Carolina State. Tajes opened play with a three-set win over Ronny Georgia of ECU, fighting back from getting blanked in the second set. Tajes put the win in the record books by a 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-4 score.
Chris Humphries of Elon knocked Tajes into consolation play with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win, but the Tech second-year player rebounded with a straight set, 6-1, 6-4 win over Michael Ogden of North Carolina State.
The Golden Eagles had two players in the "Red" singles draw, and both Jorge Alfonzo and Nicolas Guillermo went 1-2 in their three matches.
Alfonzo lost a 6-2, 7-5 match to Ristomatti Lanne of Georgia State, and also fell to Chait Kepukiran of Gardner-Webb, 6-4, 6-2. He came back to finish strong with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Will Albright of UNC Greensboro.
Guillermo lost to Connor Thompson of UNCG, 6-3, 6-4, before claiming a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Davidson's David Hager. In his finale, Guillermo put up a fight before falling to Radford's Michiel Meekers, 7-5, 7-6 (1).
Alvaro Cintas played in the "White" singles draw, dropping his three matches. He played a topsy-turvy match with Jack Riazzi of Davidson, with each dominating at some point before Riazzi posted a 6-0, 0-6 6-1 win. Warren Byran of UNCG claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win, before Cintas dopped a 6-0, 6-2 match to Jose Mazano of Radford.
Those four Golden Eagles paired up into two doubles teams, and each went 1-1.
In the "White" doubles draw, Alfonzo and Tajes lost to the NCSU tandem of Chris Mikrovas and Shoti Meparidze, 8-4. The Tech combo then posted an 8-2 win over Meekers and Manzano of Radford.
Guillermo and Cintas played in the "Grey" doubles draw. They opened with a solid, 8-4 win over James Ling and Will Bissett of East Carolina, before Janken Theon and Samuel Taylor of Radford claimed an 8-6 victory.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the fall schedule in two weeks, playing in the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 6-7-8, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
