Golden Eagles top EIU in midweek match

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team took advantage of a sunny afternoon on Wednesday, as they took down Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois, 7-0, for the first sweep of the season.

The No. 4, 5, and 6 singles matches ultimately sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles, who led 1-0 following doubles play.

Freshman Carlos Tajes topped EIU's Trent Reiman, 6-2, 6-0, in quick fashion, bringing the Golden Eagle lead to 2-0. Fellow freshman Jorge Alfonzo followed up with a 6-1, 6-2, over EIU's Grant Reiman. Sealing the match was junior Alvaro Cintas who put away Rui Silva, 6-4, 6-1, finishing their No. 4 spot match shortly following Tajes and Alfonzo.

Freshman Eduardo Mena, who played his second consecutive match at the No. 2 spot, topped Preston Touliatos, 6-4, 7-5. Mena is now on a nine-match winning streak, and is 13-4 overall in singles matches this spring.

Junior Alex Arovin fought back after falling 3-6 in the opening set, and being down 3-4 in the second, to rally in even the match with a 7-5 win. In the 10-point tie-breaker, EIU's Robert Skolik was force to retire due to injury, giving Arovin and Tech the No. 1 match.

Sophomore Alberto Esteban wrapped up singles play with a 7-6, 6-2 win over David Constantinescu in the No. 3 match.

The doubles point was earned with No. 1 pairing of Arovin and Esteban topping EIU's Skolik and Touliatos,8-6, and with senior Artem Tarasov and Alfonzo pairing up to take down the EIU twin-duo of Trent and Grant Reiman, 8-7.

EIU's No. 2 pairing of Silva and Constantinescu topped Tech's Mena and Cintas, 8-7.

The Golden Eagles will host its final two home matches on Saturday and Monday, as both SIU Edwardsville and Jacksonville State come to town. Saturdays match will begin at 12 p.m., while Monday will start at 1 p.m.
