ATLANTA, Ga. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team fell to Winthrop on Monday afternoon, 4-3, in Atlanta, Ga.
In the singles matches, no. 1 junior Alex Arovin bounced back from Saturday's defeat, and evened the match, following the duals, with his 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tremayne Mitchell.
Winthrop's no. 2 Dylan Comerford regained the lead for Winthrop with a 6-4, 6-4 lead over sophomore Alberto Estaban. The Golden Eagles were able to tie the match again at 2-2 with freshman Eduardo Mena winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 over Steven Patrick.
However, Winthrop retook the lead with Michael Chen downing junior Alvaro Cintas 6-2, 7-6. The match was clinched at the No. 5 position with Peter Nagovnak dropping freshman Carlos Tajes in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Jorge Alfonzo picked up the third point for the Golden Eagles, taking down no. 6 Ruben Franzanti, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Winthrop took the first point early, having swept the doubles spot. No. 1 Arovin and Esteban fell to combo of Comerford and Nagovnak, 8-5. Winthrop's No 2 pairing of Mitchell and Patrick topped Mena and Cintas 8-4. Doubles play was wrapped up with a fighting effort from Tejas and Alfonz, who ultimately fell 8-7(5) to the duo of Joshua Ryan and Chen.
Tech, 2-9, will continue its Atlanta trip, facing Georgia State at 2 p.m. CST on Tuesday.
