Tennis wraps up play at the WFU Fall Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Tennessee Tech tennis team wrapped up play at the WFU Fall Invite this weekend on the campus of Wake Forest University.

Junior Gagan Jain finished the highest at the WFU Fall Invite, placing sixth in the D2 singles bracket. He opened the tournament with a 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5 win over Javier Wasse from Radford. He lost to Dan Sablik from Elon, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. In the D2 single fifth place bracket, Jain topped Marko Jerminov from SC State, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. In his final game, Jain lost to Tyler Tossavainen from Navy, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.

Fellow junior Alvero Cintas competed in the B2 singles bracket, and finished 13th. In the opening match, Cintas dropped the match to Victor Marum from UNC Greensboro, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2. In the consolation quarterfinals, Cintas faced Nico Soriano from Eastern Carolina, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Cintas moved on to the 13th place bracket, where he won matches over Sofianna Chevallier from Georgia State and Andre Torres from UNC Wilmington by withdrawal victories.

Junior Othon Lima took part in the C2 singles bracket, where he finished 12th. Lima lost his opening match to UNCG's Nazhone Wilkins 6-3, 6-0. He then went on to face Sunay Bhat from Tennessee, winning 6-3, 2-1 (ret.). In the C2 consolation semifinals, Lima lost to Courtney Lock from the University of Louisville, 6-2, 6-1. This placed Lima in the 11th place bracket where he faced Ross Nigro from ECU. Nigro got the upper hand, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Eduardo Mena was placed in the A2 singles bracket, where he finished 14th. He lost his opening match to Stuart DePaolo of UNC, 6-3 5-7, 7-6(2). He dropped his second match to Felipe Jaworski of Georgia State, 6-4, 6-1. In the 13th place bracket, Mena topped Patrick O'Keefe of Radford 7-6 (5), 7-5. He then finished the tournament with a lost to Igor Smelyanski from Tennessee, 6-3, 6-4.

In the double's brackets, Lima and Mena teamed up and went 1-2. They first faced a duo of Courtney Lock and Michael Lippens from the University of Louisville, losing 8-4. They then faced Javier Wasse and Janken Thoen from Radford, winning 8-6. In their final match they faced off with Christiaan Van der Burgh and Xander Veys from UNCW, losing 8-3.

Cintas and Jain paired up, losing to the UNCG pair of Logan Walker and Connor Thompson, 8-4. They then faced Alex Howard and Ricky Saad of Davidson and lost 8-6.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action at two meets next weekend, USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships will be held in Nashville, while the Grizzly Open will take place in Lawrenceville, Ga.
