Golden Eagles looking for success at Chattanooga tournament


COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Action will start early Friday morning for the six Tennessee Tech tennis players competing this weekend at the 32nd UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Because of expected inclement weather, play will be scattered at several locations, with the main matches scheduled at the Champions Club in Chattanooga. 

To get all of the matches played, the tournament will branch out to Baylor High School, McCallie High School, and the Hixson Racquet Club (address of each site is listed below).
 
Men's teams in the tourney include Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Murray State, Covenant College, Belmont, Lipscomb, Chattanooga, Tennessee State and Tennessee in addition to the Golden Eagles. 

Competition begins at 7 a.m. CT each day and runs Friday through Sunday. Complete results will be available on GoMocs.com each day, and a story wrapping up the Golden Eagles outcomes will be posted Sunday on TTUsports.com. 

In singles play, Tech has two entries in Flight 2, three in Flight 3 and one on Flight 4. Tech's doubles pairs are listed in Flights 1, 2 and 4.

In Flight 2, Stanislov Smirnov will open play at 7 a.m. against John Peacey of UTC, and Carlos Tejas will meet Will True of Murray State at 8:30 a.m. Both of those contests will be played at McCallie.

All three Tech matches in Flight 3 singles begin at 7 a.m. Alvaro Cintas (in photo) meets Austin Boaz of UTC at Baylor. Over at McCallie, Othon Lima will face Simday Bhat of Tennessee, and Artem Tarasov, seeded second in the flight, will meet Lipscomb's Thais Minet.

Redshirt freshman Yusuke Yodono will make his Golden Eagle debut with a 7 a.m. match at Baylor against third-seeded Carson Panovec of Jacksonville State.

Tarasov and Smirnov will team up for Tech in the Flight 1 Doubles draw, where they open against No. 2 seeded Peacey and Nic Wilson of UTC at 5:30 p.m. at the Racquet Club. Tejas and Lima meet the Tenessee State pair of Darryl Hale and Joseph Daniels in Flight 2 with a 4:30 p.m. match at the Racquet Club. In Flight 4, with a 3 p.m. start also at the Racquest Club, Cintas and Yodono meet Chris Cox and Michael O'Brien of Covenant College.
