Georgia State edges past Golden Eagle tennis team, 4-3

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Georgia State captured wins in the bottom of the singles ladder to clinch a 4-3 non-conference victory Sunday over Tennessee Tech in a match played at the Peachtree City Indoor Tennis Center.

The Golden Eagles (0-6) showed strength at the top of the lineup, earning wins at three of the top four singles positions, but a sweep in doubles play and wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 gave the Panthers (4-6) the victory.

GSU made quick work of the doubles point, getting wins of 8-1 at No. 3, 8-2 at the No. 1 spot, and 8-3 at the middle position to sweep play and grab a 1-0 lead. That point would prove to be the difference when the two teams split the six singles points.

Robert Schulze claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tech's Vasily Eremeev at the No. 3 singles position to make it a 2-0 lead for the home team. The margin went to 3-0 when Sofiane Chevalier walked off the No. 5 court with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gagan Jain.

Tech's Oleksiy Arovin put Tech on the board, winning his fourth singles match of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 1 over Jannis Koeke.

Needing one more point to clinch the win, Filipe Jaworski earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Artem Tarasov in the No. 6 position for the deciding mark.

The Golden Eagles made it a close final margin with straight set wins at the remaining two contests. First, Alvaro Cintas took a 6-3, 6-4 win over Eric Baum at No. 4. The final point went to Alberto Estaban with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Thomas Cook at No. 2.

The Golden Eagle schedules slows down slightly, with just one more dual match scheduled the remainder of the month. Tech will play Lipscomb at the Richland Country Club on Friday, Feb. 28, beginning at 7 p.m.
