Golden Eagle net squad in Chattanooga Saturday to face Mocs

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- When Tennessee Tech visited Chattanooga last year for a men's tennis match, the contest was decided by a single point in a 4-3 victory for the host Mocs.

On Saturday, when coach Kenny Doyle takes the newest edition of the Golden Eagles to the Hixcon Racquet Club for a noon match, another close contest is expected from two teams that have undergone makeovers. Only five of the 12 singles players from last year return for this go-round.

Whereas Tech opened the dual season last weekend at No. 6 Tennessee with a 7-0- loss, the Mocs dropped their first dual match of the season last week at Middle Tennessee, also by a 7-0 count.

Chattanooga owns a 16-9 advantage in the all-time series.

The Mocs are working three new faces into a lineup that also includes four returners from last year's squad. UTC lost seven seniors off of the 2013 team that went 12-9 overall and 6-4 in Southern Conference action. The Mocs are coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008 and the first winning record in league play since 2007.

Tech, meanwhile, also had three new faces in the lineup at Tennessee. The Golden Eagles posted back-to-back unbeaten, 8-0 seasons in Ohio Valley Conference play while winning two league regular season championships.
