Tech players win three championships at Louisville Fall Invitational


LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tennessee Tech players found their way to the winner's circle Sunday at the Louisville Fall Invitational, led by Syrym Abdukhalikov and Alejandro Augusto who won the Flight "A" doubles championship. Tech also claimed the crowns in the consolation brackets in both Flight "A" singles and Flight "B" doubles play.

The highlight of the weekend came in Flight "A" doubles play, where Abdukhalikov and Augusto won the championship, rolling to wins over foes from Chicago State, Arkansas and Bluefield to reach the finals. In the title match, the Golden Eagle pair outlasted Louisville's Alex Gornet and Chris Simich, 8-6, to win the title.

Augusto reached the semifinals of the Flight "A" singles draw, claiming three wins before falling in a tie-breaker to Gornet. The sophomore from Madrid earned straight set victories over opponents from Chicago State, Austin Peay and Louisville earlier in the bracket.

In Flight "B" singles action, Vasily Eremeev (in photo) dropped his first match on Friday but fought all the way back to earn victories over players from Austin Peay, Kentucky and Youngstown in the consolation bracket to reach the finals. On Sunday, suffered a 6-2 loss in the first set to Youngstown's Max Schmerin, but worked his way back to tie the contest with a 6-2 win in the second. In the third, Eremeev took a 10-8 cliffhanger to win the championship.

Tech also claimed a consolation championship in the Flight "B" doubles draw as Ezequiel Gils and Eremeev weren't fazed by a first-round loss on Friday. The pair gained wins over duos from Chicago State and Louisville to reach the finals against Murray State's Max McLean and Nik Mitric. With the title on the line, Tech's combo prevailed, 8-3.

The next action for coach Kenny Doyle's team is the ITA All-American Championships, next weekend in Tulsa.
