COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech tennis team made it 13
straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season wins, including
their 5-0 mark this season, after they knocked off a strong
Jacksonville State team, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. The Golden
Eagles are tied with Austin Peay for first place in the
OVC.
Tech continued its OVC success in doubles by claiming the early point and giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Senior Syrym Abdukhalikov and sophomore Alejandro Augusto defeated Axel Sunberg and Nenad Marcec, 8-3, on the No. 1 court; the pair is 5-0 in OVC matches.
Freshman duo Alvaro Cintas and Othon Lima provided the deciding match in the No. 3 spot, winning 8-6 over Felipe Diaz and Felipe Watanabe.
With the doubles point already decided, the No. 2 match went unfinished.
In singles play, Augusto was the first off the courts when he collected his fifth consecutive singles win, 6-1, 6-2, in straight sets by defeating Axel Sundberg in the No. 2 spot.
The Gamecocks grabbed a point when Nenad Marcec knocked off sophomore Artem Tarasov in straight sets at the No. 3 spot.
In the No. 4 spot, Junior Vasily Eremeev won a hard-fought match against Felipe Diaz, 6-4, 7-6 on a tiebreaker.
Abdukhalikov captured a win and the deciding match point for Tennessee Tech when he defeated Igor Santo with a straight set win, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 which improves Abdukhalikov's singles record to 10-2 and 5-0 in OVC play.
Arturo Santa Ruiz and Lima fell in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
Tennessee Tech wraps up its home conference schedule this weekend as it faces SIUE on Saturday at 12 noon, and Eastern Illinois on Sunday at 12 noon.
Admission is free for all of Tech's home matches.
