Tennis team opens OVC play with pair of home matches this weekend

COOKEVILLE, Tenn.  – The Tennessee Tech tennis team opens Ohio Valley Conference play at home this weekend when the Golden Eagles face two in-state foes in Tennessee State and Belmont. The Golden Eagles are looking to defend their 2012 regular-season championship when they went 8-0 in conference play.

Earlier this month, TTU wrapped up its daunting non-conference schedule, which head coach Kenny Doyle hopes has prepared his team for the rigors of OVC play.

The first match of the weekend is at 1 p.m. Saturday against Tennessee State. Tech is 26-0 against the Tigers, losing only three sets overall since first facing the Tigers in 1989.

Tech wraps up the weekend against league newcomer Belmont at 12 p.m. Sunday. The Golden Eagles lost 6-1 to the Bruins last season in non-conference play, but hold an 11-6 record overall against Belmont.

Admission is free to all Tech matches, which will take place on the campus courts.
