Tech's lone point with a win at No. 2 singles
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Host Georgia State swept through all three doubles
matches, then claimed five of six singles events to earn a 6-1
victory Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action in Atlanta.
Josh Girling captured the only point of the day for the Golden
Eagles, outlasting Gabe Townes in the No. 2 singles match, the last
event of the day to finish on the Piedmont Park courts. After
winning the opening set, 6-4, Girling saw Townes bounce back for a
6-4 win in the second. Since the overall match had already been
determined, the pair played a tie-breaker in their contest which
Girling won, 10-8.
In the doubles, Alex Chen and Justin Kirstein put up the best
fight, falling 8-5 at the No. 1 spot.
In singles action, Vasaily Eremeev was the first to taste defeat,
dropping his No. 4 match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Alex Chen also
went down in straight sets in the No. 1 singles contest, 6-4, 6-4,
making it a 3-0 GSU lead.
The match officially went to the Panthers when Lucas Santana posted
a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Arturo Santa Ruiz at No. 6, giving Georgia
State a 4-0 lead. The margin got to 6-0 before Girling capped the
day with his win.
Tech, 1-4 overall in dual matches this spring, will play at Gardner Webb on Sunday. Georgia State improved to 6-3 overall.
