TROY, Ala. - Freshman Nicholas Stafford came back from down one set to win the men's "C" singles draw last weekend as the Golden Eagles men's and women's tennis teams competed at the Troy Invitational.
Stafford, a Melbourne, Australia native, won two matches in straight sets before winning the championship match, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. In addition, Stafford had an impressive run in doubles competition with teammate Justin Kirstein. The duo won two matches in the men's "B" doubles bracket to advance to the championship match where they barely fell, 9-8.
While there were no team scores kept at the Troy Invitational, several other Golden Eagles made notable showings.
Sophomore Alex Chen bounced back from a first round loss in the men's "A" singles draw to win three consecutive matches and claim the consolation championship in straight sets (6-3, 7-5).
Chen then teamed with Josh Girling in the men's "A" doubles draw where they won, 8-6, in their first round match before dropping their quarterfinal contest, 8-4.
On the women's side, freshman Victoria Cran escaped the first round of the women's "C" singles draw in impressive fashion (6-1, 6-1) before falling in the quarterfinals by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
Cran and teammate Frederike Kahl played in the women's "B" doubles draw where they defeated Cape/Cole of UAB in the first round, 8-5, but could not get past the second round as the pair fell, 8-3.
In the women's "B" singles draw, freshman Leydi Zora regrouped after a first round loss to win (7-5, 6-3) in the consolation bracket quarterfinals before falling 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals.
The women's team return to action next weekend when it travels to Virginia Tech for the Hokie Fall Invitational, while the men are off next weekend.
